Senior Situation:
I need the right documents to be sure my daughter can deal with my bills and investments, without going to court, if I get sick again. I want someone she can ask for legal advice down the road.
Senior Solution from Laura W. Patton:
I would be delighted to discuss your concerns with you in a confidential consultation. I can give you recommendations on the appropriate documents needed for financial matters and health care decisions in case you can’t speak for yourself in the future. If you own your home, I will probably recommend a Living Trust to protect your property from probate. The fees, delays, and loss of privacy connected to the probate process are compelling reasons to have a trust in place. An added bonus is that when you have a properly drafted and correctly funded Living Trust, you are protected from a court-ordered conservatorship, because your successor Trustee can manage your bills either short-term or longer-term as needed without court oversight. With many of my clients, we plan a family meeting once the documents are complete so their loved ones can meet me and ask questions about estate administration and trusts. I will give you a fee estimate at the end of our first meeting, so you can know the cost before you begin the project.

ABOUT LAURA W. PATTON: Laura loves to hike the trails of the East Bay and ski in the Sierras. She is married with three children, and has been practicing law continuously since 1990. The daughter of a Naval officer, Laura was born in Virginia, grew up in Florida, and studied in New Orleans (Tulane) and Germany (University of Hamburg). She earned her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law, in San Francisco. Once here, Laura was so entranced with the San Francisco Bay Area, she never left!
After law school, she worked for a few years with a mid-sized East Bay law firm, practicing in a variety of areas, including litigation and business law. After her first child came along, Laura started her solo practice in estate planning in order to have a more flexible schedule for her children. She soon discovered that she loves working directly with clients, especially seniors, to plan their legacies and organize their documents.
Laura works with families in the East Bay within 30 minutes of Orinda.
